New phonics check will identify thousands of children needing extra reading help

DfE news  – Thousands of children will receive the extra support they need to become confident, fluent readers thanks to the Department for Education’s new phonics check, an independent study today reveals.

Developing a new Year 1 phonics screening check

DfE Pedagogy and Practice – The intention is to introduce a new, statutory phonics screening check for all pupils in Year 1 this academic year. The check will take place in a week-long window in mid-June 2012.

Key Stage 2 assessment in 2012

DfE Teaching and Learning – Following Lord Bew’s independent review of Key Stage 2 testing, assessment and accountability, National Curriculum tests in mathematics and reading will be administered in line with previous years’ arrangements. Interim arrangements will be in place for writing in 2012, ahead of fully implementing Lord Bew’s recommendations for writing in 2013.
