Unit 1 – What is Assessment?

Activity 1 - Assessment. What’s the Point?

Watch the following video and think about the following questions:

  • What was the purpose of the assessment?
  • What role did the assessor have?
  • How did the learner feel?
  • Was the assessment helpful?
  • Did the learner learn?

Activity 2 - Assessment in Life

Now that you’ve watched the Lifted film, think about assessments that you have undertaken in your own life - either as a learner or as an assessor. Identify the following aspects of at least five different assessments. An example has been done for you.

Activity 3 - Principles of Assessment

A definition of assessment could be:

"the act of judging or deciding the amount, value, quality, or importance of something, or the judgment or decision that is made"

Relating this definition and what you already know about assessment to the conversations so far, what might be some of the key principles of assessment we may want to hold onto and/or promote in education and in particular, assessment in the classroom?

Now that you have your own thoughts about assessment, how do these compare to these principles published by AAIA on page 2 of Using Assessment for Enhanced Learning.

Activity 4 - Dylan Wiliam's thoughts

Watch the video below. Reflecting on your thoughts so far and our shared principles, write down your thoughts, questions regarding assessment and how it supports learning.
